Read More about this safari issue.Truth be told, I’d been meaning to check out Pea Farm Bistro–the Cabot eatery specializing in sandwiches and salads–for a long time. And continued positive chatter about the place finally put an end to my prolonged wait.
Driving 40 minutes each way to a restaurant you’ve never been to is risky business. If the food stinks, then a 40-minute drive home feels more like 40 hours. Fortunately, it ended up being one of the better lunches I’ve eaten in a long time. I’ll get to those details in a sec.
Pea Farm Bistro is co-owned by the husband and wife team of Justin and Andrea Wilson. If those names sound familiar, it’s because they also own the popular food truck that’s been roaming around the Little Rock area for the past few years called Hot Rod Weiners.
“We had always planned on opening a brick-and-mortar and needed to prove to ourselves we could do it. A food truck seemed like a great opportunity to get much-needed experience and raise the necessary funds,” says Andrea Wilson.
As expected, continuing to operate the truck regularly while running a restaurant does pose its fair share of challenges.
“We have been stretched thin and lacked sleep more than enough times, but we love a challenge, and having two businesses really pushes us to try our best.”
As my recent lunch proved, not only are the Wilson’s trying their best, but they’re also making some fantastic food. The restaurant is fast-casual, a place where you walk through the door and head straight for the register. To your right is a menu on the wall, one filled with a selection of 20 sandwiches, along with several salads and side items. The Homemade Pimento Cheese caught my eye, as did the Veggie Grinder and Cuban. But we ended up with the Roasted Pork Sandwich and a Club, the latter of which proved to be the best version I’ve come across in Central Arkansas. At $9.25, the massive sourdough bread sandwich was filled with a plentiful amount of sliced smoked turkey and ham, as well as bacon, Swiss, mayo, lettuce, and tomato. I also upgraded my side of potato chips to some delicious no-bean chili. It was a wise move.
The Roasted Pork Sandwich with loin meat, cheddar, apple bacon jam, and slaw on Italian bread was also a hit, as was the accompanying side of tomato soup.
All of the food was fresh and delightfully prepared by a friendly staff. A steady line of folks also indicated that Pea Farm Bistro is being well-received by locals.
“Cabot and its surrounding communities have been extremely supportive of us. We are very lucky to have some awesome regulars who sing our praises to anyone who will listen,” says Andrea Wilson.
This public praise is what got me through the door, but it’s the food that will get me back.
