I was born and raised in a small town in Southeast Kansas. However, over the last 9 years, we have moved 5+ times. My husband is from Kansas City so he is used to big city living. As we were preparing to make our move to Central Arkansas last year, I started doing some extensive research into the Little Rock area. We talked about finding a place close enough to appreciate the perks of city living while not really living in the city.
There was no other choice than Cabot, AR! The school rankings were enough to entice us, but it’s the small town charm that keeps us loving it here. Apparently Cabot has done a pretty good job keeping it a secret since many people (even nearby) seemed to think we live much further away from Little rock than 30 minutes. With only 23,776 population, we live in the perfect size town that offers just what we need; yet, it’s only a short drive to Little Rock.
Some of our favorite Cabot, AR highlights:
This is not just a BBQ place! Mean Pig BBQ is so delicious from their ribs to their sandwiches to their BBQ frito pie complete with baked beans and slaw, are fantastic. What really speaks to us is that they have paired with Dempsey Bakery (Little Rock) to offer gluten free bread products and even gluten free cookies – all freshly made!
My husband grew up in Kansas City and he believes Mean Pig BBQ competes with the best of the best. Mean Pig BBQ has been selected as a finalist for Best BBQ in Central Arkansas as well as a finalist for Best BBQ in Arkansas. For the past 11 out of 12 years, Mean Pig BBQ has been voted Best BBQ in Lonoke County. The boys loved that it was even featured on Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food!
Mean Pig BBQ was first on our list of places to eat in Cabot. While we were there, the owner came to visit at our table since his dad is gluten free as well. He suggested that we try Brick Oven Pizza for its gluten free options. Brick Oven Pizza happens to be located less than a mile from us and we hadn’t even seen it yet! It is quite the hidden treasure in a shopping center on Main Street/HWY 89 just past Wal-Mart.
Brick Oven Pizza has delicious food and wonderful customer service. It has become a regular request in our house from the boys and out of town gluten free guests. Brick Oven Pizza has saved many of our gluten free son’s pizza parties at school with the carry out option!
Cabot Community Park is a great place for recreation, family time, and a great view. The pond is stocked by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission where fishermen regularly line the pond. The park also has several pavllions, grills, a nine hole disc golf course, 2 separate playgrounds, a paved walking trail (3 laps equals 1.16 miles), and lots of room for the kids to run!
I think it’s important to support local businesses. Cabot gives us lots of opportunities for shopping locally. We have several flea markets, consignment shops, thrift stores, and even some bigger stores located around town in a variety of shopping centers.
If you are looking for seasonal produce, we have a Farmers Market May through October with locally grown produce, baked goods and arts & crafts. Holland Bottom Farm produce is available June for Summer and pumpkins are available in the fall.
This is not exactly an attraction. However, if your kids love trains like mine, there is always one running downtown. We park at the post office or library and wait for the train that will inevitably roll down the tracks.
This is just a glimpse of the food, recreation, and shopping that Cabot has to offer. Please come and explore the small town charm of Cabot with us!
