Weekend Planner: Still Time for Summer Fun


We are over halfway through summer vacation but there’s still a ton of fun events to add to your summer schedule this weekend. Plays, museum exhibits, and art shows are available and will keep you cool inside. Or you can get outside and enjoy the peach festival, state park stargazing or a comedy show by the river. Special Presentation: Out of the Dark and Into the Limelight – Helena-West Helena

Many artifacts have not been seen by the public in recent years. Artifacts are arranged together in four broad categories, including trade and commerce, personal possessions, fashion, and artistic expression. Tags identify what they are, where they came from, and what time period they represent. Visitors are encouraged to surmise these objects’ particular stories using their own memory and imaginations. Some of the more remarkable objects on view will include Al Green’s performance outfit, an intricately crafted mosaic, a fur trade kettle, homeopathic patent medicine, and a giant cash register.

Summer Star Party – Greenbrier

Arkansas State Parks can be great places to stargaze because they are often far from urban light pollution. Volunteers from the Central Arkansas Astronomical Society have telescopes available for you to view the different celestial bodies and will be there to answer your questions. Apothecary 101 – Mountain View

In this one-day class, students will learn the basics of beginning a personal herbal apothecary, using herbs to produce tinctures and salves. We will begin with making single herb tinctures, followed by a simple salve. Making liniment will also be included in the class.

Cemetery Symbolism & Property Records for Genealogy Research – Texarkanna

Join the Texarkana Museums System as we learn how to use cemetery symbolism and property record research to expand genealogy records. Guest Speakers Nancy Tribbey and Chris Woodrow provide attendees with the knowledge necessary to interpret common headstone symbols and to delve into property records as they research their family histories. Lecture will begin at 10:00 a.m. and run until 3:00 p.m. with a break for lunch. Question and Answer at 4:00 p.m. will cover problem-solving in genealogical research.
