In the 1600s, the Puritans left their original surroundings to find something better. Owner Kevin Frey liked that and when he opened a coffee shop on Dickson Street in Fayetteville in December 2014, he named it Puritan Coffee & Beer. He wanted a space that existed to bring people together over great experiences.
Over the years the branding shifted from the ship adventure theme to a bigger part of what Puritan stands for: Start well and end well. It’s a clever play on coffee and beer. Although there is no reason why you can’t order both. It’s open all day, after all.
Operations Manager Abby Patty loves their mission statement. “That’s kinda the really cool thing – our mission statement. People come and get coffee at 8 a.m. before work and then they’re back at 6 p.m. for their beer. People come to Puritan because it’s a space to get things done or have a conversation.”
Puritan Coffee & Beer is very active with the Northwest Arkansas bike scene and hosts Thirsty Thursdays. Puritan is a sponsor of Ozark Gravel Cyclists, whose mission is to support and advance the growth of a diverse gravel and backpacking community in Arkansas. So, if you ride your bike to Puritan Coffee & Beer, you’ll get $1 off your purchase.
Every Tuesday night at 7 p.m. is Trivia Night and sometimes there is a fun theme, like Taylor Swift or The Office. This is a fun experience humming along in the middle of the week. Then Friday night comes along for an even more fun experience with Bingo Night starting at 7 p.m. Plan to come a wee bit early because $5 cocktails start at 6 p.m.
Every October, Puritan has an October Fest blowout complete with beer and games. Be sure to follow Puritan Coffee & Beer’s social accounts to be alerted of these events as well as discover when – and where – they are hosting Pastry Pop-Ups.
Kevin Frey worked at Onyx Coffee before opening Puritan. Therefore, they use Onyx Coffee exclusively.
Two of the most popular coffee items are The Yard Games (sparkling matcha lemonade) and the Chi Chi Rodriquez, which is a cold brew lemonade that is really refreshing. The coffee menu is expansive from iced coffee to vanilla lattes to batch brews.
“One thing very important to us is making everything accessible,” says Abby. “You can come in and ask us about the tasting notes or tell us you want something sweet and cold. We can make that too.”
Puritan Coffee & Beer actually has a full savory food menu that covers sandwiches, burritos, bagels, muffins, cookies and pies. All pastries are made in-house and the pastry kitchen is really talented.
The breakfast burritos and blueberry muffins are two of the most popular menu items and often sell out during the day.
Puritan has twenty-one beers on tap and twelve can options in the cooler. They try to have a lot of local beers on hand and a few that venture out of our area.
“We’re always going to have Ozark Beer Co., Fossil Cove Brewing and New Province Brewing. Our taps just rotate so you can’t ever assume that we’ll have a beer you had at your last visit. We’ll have it until we run out of the keg, which is nice so you can try a lot of things.”
The Untappd! App keeps up with Puritan’s current beer offerings and allows you to “check-in” beers that you’ve experienced during your visits.
The biggest thing about Puritan Coffee & Beer is a commitment to making craft beer accessible and providing a warm and welcoming experience whether you start with coffee or end with beer.
