Read More about this safari issue. My first visit to Little Rock’s Too Sweet Bar & Grill was during the height of the pandemic, when takeout ruled my world. At the time I’d heard the place did a mean burger, which I found out firsthand while scarfing one down in the confines of my car. Fresh veggies and a soft bun stood out, but it was the slight char that helped form this perfect crust—the unmistakable characteristic of an ideal grill job—which really stood out.
Well, I was long overdue for a second trip to Too Sweet, this time to check out a few of the other menu items that I was cautiously optimistic about. The restaurant, which is located where Asher Avenue curves into Stagecoach Road, feels more like a lounge. On the late Friday morning of my pop-in, the front door was left wide open, letting a little light into the dimly lit, windowless establishment. Two pool tables reside in the middle of the room. There’s an old-school jukebox against a wall, 5-6 tables scattered throughout, and a small, open grill area behind the counter.
That is where you’ll find owner and grill master, Terry Davie, doing his thing on a blacktop that can’t be bigger than 4 feet by 4 feet. As I scanned the menu pasted on the counter, one thing stood out: “Anytime Breakfast.” Yes, please. I started my order with a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, followed by a Hot Turkey Sub, and a 2-piece fried catfish dinner. Too Sweet does the latter on Fridays and Saturdays, and since I’m always in fried catfish research mode, ordering a few pieces was an easy decision. As I found out a few minutes later, it was a wise one. Crispy, with a well-seasoned cornmeal batter, these catfish filets hit the spot, as did the crinkle-cut fries. I wouldn’t hesitate to order this meal again.
As for the Hot Turkey Sub? Another winner. Davie isn’t stingy with portions, as evident by the sandwich’s barely visible, toasted hoagie roll, which came topped with a heaping portion of sliced turkey, grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and cheese.
This brings me to the breakfast sandwich. No offense to the catfish and turkey sub, which were both outstanding. But an argument could be made that I’ve never had a better egg sandwich. Anywhere. Ever. I mean it. Just look at it. The buttered white bread was grilled to a golden brown, hit with a little garlic salt and jam-packed with a fried egg, American cheese, and thick strips of bacon. It all melded together so wonderfully. I have made literally a thousand egg sandwiches at home and have never achieved anything close to this one.
I have my eye on the patty melt, Philly cheesesteak, and the wings for my next visit. Something tells me that they won’t disappoint.
Too Sweet Bar & Grill is the real deal.
