Read More about this safari issue.Taqueria Guadalajara is conveniently located just off I-40 on Camp Robinson in the Levy area of North Little Rock. They serve authentic Mexican food seasoned to perfection, so don’t expect any cheese dip and chips here. What you will get is delicious and inexpensive traditional Mexican dishes like burritos, tortas, huaraches, sopes and gorditas. They also have a variety of tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, nachos, tamales and “platillos de casa.”
Huaraches are flat, thick corn tortillas topped with your choice of meat, lettuce and sour cream. Sopes are similar, but smaller corn tortillas topped with meat, cabbage, tomato and Mexican cheese. Tortas are bread stuffed with meat, beans, lettuce, tomato and avocado.
The meat options are vast with pastor (pork), milanesa (breaded steak), carnitas (pork butt), asada (steak), lengua (tongue), pollo (chicken), barbacoa (barbecue), and chorizo (Mexican sausage) available for most dishes.
Generous, egg-filled tacos are available every morning for breakfast. Torta campechano, a barbecue-sandwich-like dish, is another fan favorite. On weekends, Guadalajara serves up their house specialty, seafood soup.
To drink, I recommend the horchata, a sweet rice milk drink with cinnamon. It’s cool and refreshing for hot summer days and completes the authentic Mexican dining experience.
On my most recent trip there, my husband and I ordered the carnitas platillos de casa, sopes con asada, gorditas papas con huevo (potato with egg), and a flan for dessert. It was all delicious and well under $20.
Not all the staff at Guadalajara speak English well, so take along a Spanish-speaking friend if you can. If not, go anyway, close your eyes and randomly pick something from the menu. You really can’t go wrong.
In addition to the restaurant, Guadalajara is also a grocery store, meat market (including fresh ground chorizo) and bakery with a variety of Mexican products and fresh produce. They are open daily 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.
