Pure Joy Ice Cream officially opened in charming downtown Siloam Springs in 2017. Before the grand opening, owner and ice cream extraordinaire, Matt Feyerabend, was all over Northwest Arkansas sharing his ice creams at festivals and events.
He named his ice cream creations “Pure Joy” for two reasons. One was the simple fact that his ice creams and sorbets use pure ingredients. The second reason is that the first time he sold his ice creams was at a fundraiser for a friend who was adopting a little girl whose middle name just happened to be Joy.
Matt tries to find a locally sourced ingredient for each flavor. At first, flavors were created for what excited him and was fun. Once it came time to build out a full menu, he wanted to create a wide selection of flavors that would appeal to just about everyone. All flavors have a slight twist that makes Pure Joy Ice Cream unique.
Once you step inside the doors, you will experience a wide selection of flavors: decadent, rich, creamy, smooth, tangy, sweet, tart and fruit offerings. And everything is homemade.
“Our cookies and cream flavor is called Salted Cookie Crumble,” Matt shared. “We make our own cocoa cookie to evoke a cocoa-rich chocolate cookie with a sweet tangy ice cream that mimics the icing in an Oreo cookie. It’s incredible.”
Pure Joy makes a caramel for their Bourbon Caramel Swirl ice cream from scratch. It was so popular that Matt decided to bottle the caramel and make it available for purchase in the store. They take sugar and cook it into a caramel and then add in a little bourbon and a little smoked salt.
The most popular ice cream flavors on the menu are the Bourbon Caramel Swirl and Happy Goat (sweet and tangy, crafted with goat cheese from White River Creamery in Elkins, and local honey and tastes like cheesecake).
Pure Joy is generous with its tasting policy, so taste those two popular flavors or sample them all! Each flavor has a unique twist, such as their Blackout Lemonade Sorbet. Surprisingly, it has activated charcoal as an ingredient, which gives it its deep dark color.
Pure Joy Ice Cream sells pints of ice cream in a freezer located in the lobby. Recently they’ve been prepacking small, single-serve cups with the cute old-fashioned wooden “spoons.”
Pure Joy Ice Cream is a destination place.
Matt works very hard at making the ice cream shop approachable, unique and exciting. Perhaps that is why it is a local favorite AND a destination place.
“We are a little bit of everything, and we are definitely a destination for a lot of people,” Matt shared. “A good number of our customers will travel to Siloam Springs. Some live hours away and I will ask them, “What brings you to Siloam?” and they will answer, “This.” We have people who pass through on the way to Buffalo River and Devil’s Den. We’re just one of their stops as they come through from Eastern Oklahoma. We also get tons of support from our town.”
Our favorite Arkansas vlogger, Busvlogger, shares a video of making ice cream at Pure Joy. Check it out.
