Let’s face it, there is something a little comforting about walking into a restaurant that has previously delighted the masses or at least one person you know and trust. Well, ziggywurst in downtown Siloam Springs is one of those places. My family and I recently stayed at an Airbnb in Tontitown about 20 minutes east of the border town. Once my friend caught wind of our whereabouts, he did not hesitate to tell me about the nearby German restaurant.
Thank goodness he did because our Saturday afternoon lunch proved to be the culinary highlight of our weekend. First things first, this was my first time in Siloam Springs. What a cute little town! I already want to go back.
As for ziggywurst, there is nothing not to like about this restaurant. The menu is focused on German comfort food classics like sausages and schnitzel, and they even offer crepes and a variety of sandwiches. The sausages, with more than 15 options, come from nearby Siegi’s Sausage Factory in Tulsa and are grilled on the flattop at ziggywurst.
For our “3 Sausage Plate Without Bun,” we went with the beer brat, all-beef frank, and the chicken jalapeno sausage. All were delightful, especially the chicken with its variety of spices and subtle heat. Each sausage paired well with the accompanying thick-cut grilled onions and tart sauerkraut, along with the mustard condiments which proved to be a variation of spicy brown and honey mustard.
The kids dove into the mac & cheese topped with fried onions with reckless abandon, scarfing down the triple cheese-laden elbow pasta within minutes. I got to try a bite or two. Aside from needing a pinch of salt, the dish was memorable with a cheese pull like none other. My corned beef sandwich with thinly sliced grilled meat was a slight departure from your typical deli offering on rye bread, but certainly was something I would not hesitate ordering again.
One thing was quite evident as the four of us sat around our patio table – ziggywurst’s food is made for sharing. My recommendation is to order a few things that will agree with everyone in your party, set each plate in the middle of the table, and go to town. In our case, while I would not want to commit to an entire sausage plate, corned beef sandwich, or vat of mac & cheese, picking off each plate proved to be the way to go.
We polished off everything on the table. Rather than slip into a food coma, a short jaunt through downtown for a little window shopping followed by a post-lunch beer at nearby Ivory Bill Brewing proved to be a perfect ending to our afternoon. Talk about another absolute gem of a place.
Siloam Springs, you have my attention. See you again, soon.
