The month-long celebration is organized by the League of American Bicyclists, and is celebrated in communities all over the United States with a series of events intended to showcase the benefits of bicycling, and encourage more folks to giving biking a try.
This year, there are several events planned in Fayetteville and across the region to commemorate the occasion.
The fun begins on Sunday, May 1 with a Bike To Baum ride from Dickson Street to Baum Stadium for the Arkansas versus Texas A&M Baseball game. Cyclists will meet up at the trail crossing on Dickson Street at noon, and will make the two mile fun ride to Baum Stadium. The event will include giveaways, including 30 free tickets to the game sponsored by Adventure Subaru.
Fayetteville Foam Fest this year will include the first ever Cycling Brewery Tour as part of their event this year. The event, just as the name suggests, is a bicycle-led tour of several of Fayetteville’s local breweries along the trail system. Here’s more information.
Walton Arts Center’s annual Artosphere Festival this year will include several bike-friendly events as well, including three “bike-itechture” cycling tours of notable architectural sites in Bentonville and Fayetteville on May 12 and May 21.
On Saturday, May 14, the second annual Square to Square ride will take off from the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, and make its way toward Lawrence Plaza on the Bentonville Square. Finishers of the 32 mile ride will receive a t-shirt, pint glass, and commemorative medal.
Also part of the celebration are the annual Bike to Work Week from May 16-20, Bike to School Day on May 4, and Bike to Work Day on May 20, all encouraging folks to trade in their cars for bicycles for their daily commute.
More information about specific cycling events in May are below. Happy bike month!
