Read More about this safari issue. When yarn lovers walk into The Twisted Purl Yarn Shop in Conway, it’s a lot like kids walking into a candy store. Only instead of jars full of brightly colored sticky sweet treats, you are surrounded by a rainbow of baskets and bins filled with soft luscious yarn and fiber. “Feel free to pet the yarn,” encourages Cyndi Minster, owner and handmade yarn artisan.
“I like to keep it cold in here so people will think of making warm things out of yarn. And it’s a great place to beat this summer heat.”
Cyndi began her dream of having a yarn store from very humble beginnings. “My love affair with yarn started out with knitting. But I soon discovered that it wasn’t so much about finishing a project as it was about the feeling of the yarn running through my fingers. That’s when I discovered spinning.” Cyndi soon began selling her fiber creations at craft shows and online. But “After years of doing craft shows and festivals, and wholesaling our products worldwide, the hubby caved in and we’ve now opened a local yarn shop.”
On any given day you can find a group of yarn enthusiasts conversing around the table or sitting on the comfy couch. Some of their hands move quickly with the skills of a tried and true knitter and some are patiently learning crochet for the first time. The Twisted Purl offers weekly classes in many fiber related experiences: knitting, crochet, spinning and felting. Shop goers can even schedule one-on-one lessons or help with projects.
“Sometimes customers just like to pop in for a cup of coffee and a chat over yarn and stitches. I love that the shop has become a community meeting spot for yarn-a-holics.”
This October Cyndi is organizing a Yarn Crawl with her fellow yarn stores across the state. Yarn fans can visit the shops during the crawl to win prizes and get goodies. The upcoming Yarn Crawl is a statewide shop hop. Crawlers have two weekends and the week in between to visit as many participating shops possible. It all kicks off on ‘I LOVE Yarn Day’ (yes that’s a real thing) October 15th-23rd. It’s only Arkansas shops and it’s an excellent way to get out, visit your favorites, discover new shops, and love on all the yarn.
So when you are in Conway stop in and see Cyndi at The Twisted Purl located at 1105 Deer Street, #5 just off downtown. You can also find her lovely fiber finery on her website www.thetwistedpurl.com or every on social media @TheTwistedPurl.
(In case you have been wondering about the name, “purl” is a knitting stitch. When Cyndi started out knitting she found out she was twisting her purls and well, as you can see, the rest is history.)
